Louisiana Legislation Permits Residents to Carry Weapons While Frog Hunting

Louisiana Senate Bill 106 Aims to Support Frog Hunters

Louisiana Senate Bill 106 is intended to permit frog hunters to carry firearms while navigating through forests and waters at night.

Reportedly, the purpose of SB 106 isn’t to promote the shooting of frogs, but rather to ensure that hunters can protect themselves from various dangers, including wildlife after dark.

The bill, sponsored by State Senator Eddie Lambert (R), suggests that the option to carry weapons at night could enhance the sense of safety for hunters.

Lambert acknowledges that the previous ban on arming frog hunters was mainly to deter poaching, though it might inadvertently restrict the rights of law-abiding hunters. There are concerns that this could face legal challenges regarding the right to bear arms.

According to SB 106:

The existing law allows frog hunting with specific equipment, but it prohibits transporting or owning any type of firearm while hunting frogs at night.

The proposed legislation keeps the original law intact while eliminating restrictions on carrying or possessing firearms during nighttime frog hunting.

SB 106 has successfully passed the Louisiana Senate with a unanimous vote of 96-0.
