GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Strongly Responds to ‘Washington Talk’

Concerns Raised Over Winsome Earle-Sears’ Gubernatorial Campaign

Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican candidate running for governor in Virginia’s 2025 election, has dismissed a concerning report about her campaign. In an exclusive statement to the Daily Call News Foundation, she emphasized that “Washington chatter” won’t distract her from her goal of improving the lives of Virginians, even if she becomes governor. Her comments follow a report from Politico that suggested Virginia GOP insiders have reservations about her electability.

“I’m concentrating on the important issues: enhancing the lives of Virginians,” Earle-Sears stated. “Washington discussions won’t sway me. My focus is on increasing people’s income, ensuring safety, and safeguarding Virginia from the poor track record of Spanberger and the daunting visions ahead.”

Some within the Virginia GOP are worried about her campaign due to financial discrepancies. They pointed out that her Democrat opponents, like Abigail Spanberger, are significantly out-raising her. Earle-Sears also faced backlash for comparing her diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to slavery during a speech in 2023.

A senior GOP staff member, speaking anonymously, expressed a mixed view. They noted, “Many of us think we could approach this differently. She seems like a solid candidate—could be a good governor—but she’s not projecting the strength we perhaps want to see.”

Recent polls show Earle-Sears falling behind Spanberger in the race. A survey indicated that Spanberger has a substantial lead, with early polling from Roanoke College revealing that she is ahead by double digits in the November gubernatorial election.

Current Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin is ineligible for re-election in 2025, according to the state constitution. He had previously endorsed Earle-Sears, calling her “an outspoken advocate for common-sense conservative principles.” However, Spanberger has raised significantly more funds—$6.7 million in the first quarter of 2025, compared to Earle-Sears’ $3.1 million, according to state financial data.

The outcome of Virginia’s gubernatorial race is likely to impact the broader sentiment for midterm elections in 2026, especially considering the perception of the Trump administration’s effectiveness and cuts in various federal agencies. In the last presidential election, Trump won all swing states, but Virginia went to Kamala Harris.

Democratic spokesperson Maggie Amjad addressed Earle-Sears’ challenges, stating, “Despite her claims of facing two major challengers and criticizing campaign staff, it’s clear that Winsome Earle-Sears is struggling to unify the Republicans and lacks a strong campaign.” She added, “Virginians deserve a governor who will advocate for them, instead of merely softening Trump’s image and promoting a radical agenda.”

In response to this situation, Spanberger’s campaign reached out for comments from the Virginia Democrats.
