Proposal to Prohibit Pushing Ball Carriers from Packers Does Not Pass, ‘Tush Push’ Stays Permitted

Packers Fail to Ban Controversial Play

In 2025, the play that significantly aided the Philadelphia Eagles in their Super Bowl Championship will be accessible.

On Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers fell short of the 24 votes required to prohibit the tactic of pushing a ball carrier. They only garnered 22 votes.

According to Diana Lassini from Athletic, teams like the Ravens, Patriots, Jets, and Lions joined the 10 teams voting against the ban.

The Packers initially proposed banning the “Tush Push” during the NFL winter meeting. However, the discussions leaned towards expanding a ban that would restrict players from pushing ball carriers in any situation.

It appears that all parties involved recognize that the rules are aimed at countering the Eagles’ well-known strategy.

Nonetheless, the proposed language might have been too broadly defined, which contributed to its failure to secure enough votes.

The Packers presented safety concerns as the basis for the ban, but they were unable to substantiate that the play led to increased injuries, causing that argument to lose momentum.

Although the ban didn’t pass, the Packers’ coalition remains at 22 votes, leaving them only two votes short. If they can persuade two more teams before next year’s meeting, there may be another chance to revisit the proposal.

For the moment, the “Tush Push” will continue as is.
