Jim Irsay, Indianapolis Colts Owner and CEO, Dies at 65

This week, Jim Irsay, the owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts, passed away at the age of 65 after leading the franchise since 1997.

Colts COO Pete Ward confirmed Irsay’s death in a statement released by the team on Wednesday, noting that he died peacefully in his sleep.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved owner and CEO, Jim Irsay,” Ward said. “Jim was known for his generosity, commitment to the community, and especially his dedication to his family. His passion for the Indianapolis Colts was unparalleled.”

The statement highlighted Irsay’s fond memories of youth camps in Baltimore and his relationship with players, coaches, and staff, who will deeply miss him. He worked his way up through various roles before becoming the youngest general manager in the team’s history in 1984, when the Colts moved to Indianapolis. After taking full ownership in 1997, he guided the team to a Super Bowl Championship and multiple division titles.

Irsay is survived by his daughters Carly Irsay Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Karen Jackson, along with his ex-wife Meg Coyle and ten grandchildren.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell paid tribute to Irsay, describing him as a man of great commitment to both his family and his team.

Since he has been in charge, the Colts secured the Lombardi Trophy in 2006 and made 16 playoff appearances as of 2020.
