Person Who Passed Away in Hantavirus Outbreak Had Been to Rat-Infested Landfill

The identity of a man from the Netherlands who died from hantavirus on a cruise ship has been confirmed.

The individual, referred to as “Patient Zero,” was 70-year-old ornithologist Leo Silpeauld. He was traveling with his wife, Mirjam Silpeauld, 69, on an extended birdwatching trip in South America, as reported by New York Post on Saturday.

The couple had been in Argentina in late March, visiting a landfill located just outside Ushuaia, where birdwatchers from around the globe come to spot the rare white-throated caracara.

Ushuaia holds the title of the southernmost city in the world, which has led some to call it the “City at the End of the World.”

According to reports, Argentine officials believe the couple might have inhaled particles from gerbil feces at the Ushuaia landfill. This strain of hantavirus, known as the Andean strain, is unique in its potential for human-to-human transmission.

Just four days later, on April 1, they boarded the MV Hondius along with 112 other passengers, many of whom were also birdwatchers and scientists. On April 6, Leo began experiencing symptoms like fever, headache, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Tragically, he passed away on the ship five days later.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has stated in 2024 that hantaviruses can lead to severe illness and even death.

Infectious throughout the globe, hantaviruses primarily transmit to humans through contact with rodents, particularly their urine, feces, or saliva. Though bites or scratches from rodents can also cause transmission, this is a rare occurrence.

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted potential for increased infections following reports of three individuals becoming infected after appearing in a music video. AFP news agency reported that one of the individuals on the MV Hondius passed away.

However, health authorities have attempted to downplay fears about a global pandemic from this rat-borne virus, stating that it is less contagious than the new coronavirus, according to AFP.

Breitbart News mentioned that the CDC has categorized the cruise ship outbreak as a Level 3 situation, which is the lowest emergency classification.

During a report this week, President Donald Trump remarked that he would have been informed about the virus had he been briefed and expressed hope that the situation is being managed.

“There are many experts analyzing it, and I’m optimistic,” he added.
