Yunchan Lim’s Remarkable Performance in Rachmaninov’s Concerto
The 2022 Van Rivern Piano Competition took place in Fort Worth, Texas, where the latest winner really stood out. Following this, Yunchan Lim’s recital in Europe, along with his first disc from Decca featuring Chopin, captured attention. His remarkable rendition of Rachmaninov’s third concerto during both the semi-final and final, showcased a control and assurance that was truly impressive for someone so young—just 18 years old.
Decca has recently reissued his performance from the Fort Worth Concerto, and the audio quality is noticeably clearer. What strikes me is his confidence and calmness throughout the performance. He seems to have an unshakeable belief in the direction the majestic concerto should take. It’s staggering, honestly, to hear such maturity and depth from someone so young.
While it’s clear he navigates the technical demands of the piece with apparent ease, the brilliance of his interpretation goes beyond mere execution. Each musical line—especially in the slow movement—is phrased thoughtfully, creating a cohesive experience. I wonder though, in the finale, if some of that youthful exuberance shines through a bit too intensely. Nevertheless, his performance holds its own alongside legendary interpretations by Rachmaninov, Horowitz, Argerich, and Ashkenazy.
That said, even with the Decca remaster, the sound isn’t flawless. Certain details from the orchestra can feel distant, and at times, the strings come off as lacking in depth and richness. Normally, such shortcomings might hinder a five-star rating, but, surprisingly, in this case, Lim’s performance manages to transcend those issues, leaving a lasting impression.
