Microsoft prohibits employees from using the terms ‘Palestine’ and ‘Gaza’ in emails.

Microsoft’s Internal Email Restrictions

Microsoft has implemented a ban on terms like “Palestine,” “Gaza,” and “genocide” within its internal email system. This move appears to be an effort to address tensions that have arisen amid recent protests related to the company’s connections with Israel.

According to reports, Microsoft has installed filters that block emails containing these politically sensitive terms without alerting either the sender or the recipient.

In recent months, the company faced demonstrators from a faction of employees showing support for Palestinian issues.

One advocacy group, known as “Apartheid’s navy blue no,” is urging Microsoft to cut its links with the Israeli government and military altogether.

Microsoft Azure, the company’s cloud computing service, is reportedly utilized by various units of the Israeli military, engaging in activities spanning both combat and information operations.

A leaked document indicates that Microsoft secured approximately $10 million worth of trades, providing extensive technical support during the ongoing Gaza conflict.

One Microsoft employee, affiliated with the protest group, stated that they became aware of the email filter last Wednesday. Concerns have been raised within the group, as unconventional spellings of terms like “Israel” and “P4lestine” are not blocked, suggesting a selective silencing of viewpoints.

The response from Microsoft to this controversy has been somewhat muted. Despite the backlash, the company maintains its partnerships in Israel. A senior representative stated that they engage with governments worldwide to ensure safe cloud services, emphasizing adherence to legal and ethical standards.

Right before a recent corporate event, Microsoft issued a report asserting that there’s no proof their technologies are being used to cause harm. This document seems to be an attempt to quell rising scrutiny and internal discord.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated significantly after an unexpected attack on October 7, 2023, leading to considerable civilian casualties. As of May 2025, the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached alarming levels, with thousands injured and killed.
