Kevin Keene, president of the American Beverage Association (ABA), discussed potential market-based solutions to improve public health during an interview on Tuesday. Alongside Chief Matthew Boyle from the Breitbart News Washington Bureau, Keene highlighted the beverage industry’s vital role in maintaining America’s health.
Their conversation revolved around the beverage sector’s emphasis on investment, innovation, and enhancing consumer choices, all aligned with the agenda of Maha.
Keene articulated that the beverage industry extends beyond just a handful of large corporations; it encompasses numerous small and medium-sized businesses integral to American communities and actively contributing through investments.
“We are deeply embedded in communities nationwide through our bottling systems,” he expressed, insisting that investment and innovation are central to their strategy, emphasizing the importance of a free market approach.
“These companies want to invest, to expand, to grow. That’s exactly what the president is looking for,” he pointed out.
Boyle raised a pertinent issue regarding the funding of sugary drinks through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), often referred to as Food Stamps.
“The inquiries about SNAP are valid,” Keene remarked, referencing his experience working with former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson, who was known for his welfare reform efforts during President George W. Bush’s administration.
“Thompson’s initiative aimed to transition individuals from welfare to employment. Micromanaging grocery choices could harm those efforts,” he explained.
“While it’s reasonable to question SNAP, the restrictions in place may not yield the desired outcomes if they focus solely on a couple of products,” Keene added.
He expressed confidence that the industry is aligned with the Greater Maha agenda, which he sees as an admirable initiative.
“Who wouldn’t want to make America healthier?” he asked. “We aspire for robust, healthy communities, and we wish to further this dialogue,” he noted.
Keene encouraged listeners to consider the beverage aisle, remarking on the variety available today. “Many of these options stem from our willingness to take entrepreneurial risks,” he shared.
He pointed out the evolution of products, mentioning that beyond traditional sodas, beverages like Coke Zero and various zero-sugar options now exist, including teas, sports drinks, and energy drinks, which are particularly popular in Congress.
“These selections empower consumers with significant choices. Concerns about sugar and calories are warranted,” Keene acknowledged.
He shared striking statistics, stating that “60% of the beverages purchased by Americans now contain zero sugar.”
“We are not just offering new options; we’re providing tasty choices that consumers want and are willing to spend on,” he remarked, citing examples like Poppi, a prebiotic drink acquired by Pepsi, and Coca-Cola’s upcoming prebiotic soda.
Keene stressed the importance of integrating into American culture, mentioning how various leaders, including President Trump and Vice President JD Vance, enjoy their products. “We’re part of snacking culture, and that’s not something we’re ashamed of,” he emphasized.
In closing, Keene reassured listeners, saying, “Our commitment to making America healthier is unwavering.”
“We’ve been dedicated to this for quite some time,” he concluded.
