New book shows Democrats were worried about Biden’s age long before the mishandled 2024 debate.

New Insights on President Joe Biden

Recent discussions surrounding President Joe Biden have reignited concerns regarding his cognitive abilities and the dynamics within his administration. This has, in turn, prompted Democrats to reassess their strategies.

Concerns among Biden’s aides about his age had existed long before the anticipated 2024 presidential debates against former President Donald Trump, according to CNN’s Jake Tupper and Axios’ Alex Thompson.

For instance, Biden reportedly faltered during an intense eight-day bus tour in Iowa back in December 2019, struggling to recall the name of longtime advisor Mike Donilon.

The book suggests this wasn’t the only issue on Biden’s mind while campaigning in 2020. Reporters noted that he often appeared to “white knuckle” through debates, seeming to grapple with interviews far more than during his terms as senator or vice president.

Concerns Over Misreading Son Beau’s Cancer Diagnosis

Another revelation in the new book highlights a misinterpretation by the Biden family regarding public perception of his son Beau’s cancer diagnosis. Biden’s aides expressed worry about his performance on the campaign trail, suggesting voters in key states saw “a diminished individual” who often seemed “less than fully present” during their rigorous schedule.

Without the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it was believed his team could better manage the campaign’s momentum leading up to November. But even amid the pandemic, Tupper and Thompson recount how Biden struggled to maintain his messaging. His close aides, Annie Tomasini and Anthony Bernal, indicated that extra measures were taken to prepare him for interviews, utilizing scripted Q&As as a resource.

As the campaign progressed, they adapted to Biden’s needs by adjusting the setup of virtual meetings. However, there were serious concerns about his ability to engage meaningfully; Tupper and Thompson relay that Democrats expressed frustration after viewing an over-edited video showing Biden’s difficulties interacting with voters during the Democratic National Convention. One party member likened the experience to watching a frail grandparent trying to drive.

Some Democrats have voiced doubts about Biden’s capacity to remain effective, worried about the daily realities his aides might face behind the scenes. Yet, a Biden representative defended the portrayal in the book, insisting there’s no evidence that he hadn’t been performing his duties. The spokesperson emphasized that Biden was, in fact, leading with “empathy and skill,” countering claims of any neglect of national security or crucial presidential issues.

However, a closer circle of Biden’s confidantes shared with Tupper and Thompson that early signs of decline seemed to surface in 2015, following Beau’s tragic passing. The treatment Beau received highlighted the Biden family’s tendency to avoid transparency about health concerns, even when they pertain to a public figure.

Tupper and Thompson further outline how the Biden family historically struggled with openness regarding health matters, noting an instance where Beau’s wife expressed confusion over the necessity of secrecy surrounding his illness.

This analysis reflects a more extensive review of Biden’s cognitive challenges noted since the 2020 campaign, shedding light on the role his inner circle may have played in downplaying these issues.
