Sunday is shaping up to be a significant day for motorsport enthusiasts.
There are a couple of major events on the calendar: the Monaco Grand Prix will take place in the afternoon, followed by the Coca-Cola 600 in the evening. It’s a jam-packed day for fans.
NASCAR driver Ryan Blaney will be behind the wheel of his Team Penske car for the Coca-Cola 600. His car is sporting a unique design with an Alter Child Drink logo on the hood. Another NASCAR colleague, Kyle Larson, is attempting what’s known in racing circles as a “double.”
This “double” is quite a challenge, where a driver races in the Indy 500 and then makes a quick flight to Charlotte to participate in the Coca-Cola 600. Last year, Larson joined a select group of five drivers who tried to pull this off, but he didn’t make it in time for the NASCAR race.
Blaney mentioned to Fox News Digital that it was pretty impressive to see Larson attempt that feat last year.
“It’s the biggest racing day,” he commented. “You start with Monaco, then it’s Indy, and we wrap it up with the 600. I wake up, watch Monaco, cheer for my Penske teammates during the 500, and then I get ready for my race. It was cool to see him pull it off last year, for sure.”
Interestingly, Blaney also expressed curiosity about the “double” attempt since his team has a driver competing in the Indy 500 as well.
“It’s something I’ve always thought about,” he said. “If the opportunity arises, why not? I’m with a great team that has the capability, but it’s not something you often see.”
In the past, drivers like John Andretti, Tony Stewart, Robbie Gordon, and Kurt Busch have tried their hands at this double-header. Interestingly, Stewart was the only one to successfully complete both races on the same day, but none have won either event while attempting it.
This weekend, Larson is hopeful that he can change that narrative.
The Indy 500 is set to air on Fox on May 25, with coverage beginning at 10 a.m. It will also be available for streaming online.
