Potential Medicaid Cuts in Washington
Many residents in Washington could face a loss of healthcare if the cuts to Medicaid proposed by the Senate are approved.
Seattle’s Governor, Bob Ferguson, highlighted the urgent need for Medicaid reform during a press conference on Thursday morning. He acknowledged the dire situation, stating, “I want to be transparent: That’s miserable. The hospitals are closed, the nursing homes are closed, which will affect not only those in Medicaid, but Washingtonians throughout our state.”
The bill is pending a Senate vote, and if passed, it would offer substantial tax breaks to billionaires at the expense of an estimated 8.6 million individuals losing access to healthcare.
Initial estimates indicate that as many as 200,000 Washingtonians could lose their Medicaid coverage by next year due to these cuts, which would result in a $2 billion reduction in federal funding for the state’s Medicaid program.
Sommer Kleweno Walley, the CEO of Harborview Medical Center, expressed concern over the hospital’s viability amid potential cuts. “Harborview’s ability to serve all patients is questionable,” she remarked. “There’s a very difficult conversation about which parts of the harbor view remain open and which parts should be rethought.”
Jen Chung Jewell shared her worries about the impact of these cuts on her family. Her son, Gabriel, is disabled, and she emphasized the critical role Medicaid support plays. “I love my son,” Jewell said. “And he hates being swayed by this story, along with many others, about the need to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse.”
Jewell expressed her deep concerns about the future, saying, “I’m worried that Medicaid won’t be available in the future, to help my son live and work one day, and to help him thrive in his community for a long time, especially since I was gone.”
