Couple imprisoned after infant discovered in household with decaying goat body and numerous animals

A couple in South Carolina was arrested after police uncovered a horrifying scene in their home. The pair, Kayla Leonard and Nicholas Foley, lived in squalor alongside the remains of an eight-month-old goat and a staggering 47 other animals.

Authorities took action on Monday after the state Department of Social Affairs alerted them about dreadful living conditions at their residence in Honea Path.

Upon investigation, officers discovered numerous raccoons, rabbits, dogs, cats, and chickens amidst a disturbing accumulation of animal waste. The decaying goat carcasses were found in the bathtub.

Dr. Kim Sanders, director of Anderson County PAWS, remarked, “Breathing was extremely difficult, given the sheer amount of feces and ammonia present.” She described the situation as deeply troubling for both the staff and herself, saying, “It’s hard to see animals in such a state.”

The chaos inside the home was evident—multiple dogs were found trapped in wooden frames piled atop each other, with food bowls and trash strewn everywhere.

Police indicated that they had never encountered such “terrifying” living conditions in over three decades on the job. Sanders noted that it was clear the animals had been confined for a prolonged period.

While the adults made their own choices regarding their living conditions, Sanders expressed disbelief at the situation involving the infant present: “It’s just hard to comprehend, especially knowing that there was an eight-month-old baby there.”

The child was removed from the home and placed in the care of relatives. Chief Christopher Miller assured that the infant was doing well, stating, “The kids were in pretty good condition despite the unsanitary environment.”

Officials concluded that the home would likely be deemed uninhabitable, with the parents facing charges of child neglect and animal cruelty.
