Trump’s Warning to Apple on Manufacturing
President Donald Trump has issued a warning to Apple, suggesting that failure to move iPhone production to the United States could result in a hefty tariff of 25%.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “I have informed a long time ago that I expect that iPhones for sale in the United States to be manufactured and built in the United States, not in India.”
This statement has stirred reactions in the financial markets, causing fluctuations in stock futures. Notably, Nasdaq 100 contracts experienced significant declines, with Apple shares dropping by 4%.
Trump has often targeted Apple in his broader campaign to compel companies to increase domestic manufacturing. Currently, a majority of iPhones are produced in China, and there is no substantial smartphone production happening in the U.S.
Despite this, Apple has committed to bolster its workforce domestically and plans to invest billions over the next four years. Historically, the company’s supply chain for its popular mobile devices has been predominantly centered in China.
Earlier this month, Trump mentioned that he had urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to halt the establishment of manufacturing plants in India.
As of now, Apple has not provided any comments regarding Trump’s assertions.
