Harvard University has initiated legal action against the Trump administration, following the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) recent decision to remove foreign students’ status, intensifying the conflict over accreditation and financial implications.
In a letter addressed to the Harvard community, President Alan Gerber unveiled the lawsuit.
“Without international students, Harvard simply isn’t Harvard,” he stated, referencing the complaint.
The case, lodged in a federal court in Massachusetts, claims that the administration’s conduct breaches the First Amendment, constitutional due process rights, and the DHS’s established regulations.
This legal move came shortly after DHS Secretary Kristi Noem mandated that Harvard eliminate the accreditation of its Student and Exchange Visitors Program.
Gerber described the government’s actions as an attempt to undermine academic independence and impose unlawful federal control over curriculum, faculty, and student organizations.
“We denounce this illegal and unreasonable behavior,” he added.
