Plane crash takes the lives of metal music executive and drummer

Tragic Plane Crash in San Diego

In a heartbreaking incident, a small plane crashed into a residential area in San Diego early Thursday morning, tragically taking the lives of six people, including notable music executives Dave Shapiro and drummer Daniel Williams.

Williams, formerly a drummer for the metal band The Devil Wears Prada, posted on Instagram shortly before the crash, detailing that he was flying with Shapiro. The band later paid tribute on social media, expressing deep loss and love: “There are no words. We owe you everything. We love you forever.”

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Shapiro was a licensed pilot and the registered owner of the plane involved in the crash. The plane reportedly went down in a neighborhood near a US Navy property, resulting in significant damage to houses and vehicles, and igniting several fires.

“We are devastated by the loss of our co-founders, colleagues, and friends. Our hearts go out to the families and everyone affected by today’s tragedy,” stated Sound Talent Group, the agency co-founded by Shapiro.

Shapiro launched Sound Talent Group in 2018 alongside Tim Borror and Matt Andersen. The agency represented a wide range of artists, from Pierce The Veil to Vanessa Carlton. He was known as a staunch advocate for independent musicians and had appeared on Billboard’s “30 Under 30” list, acknowledging his contributions to the music industry.

The music community has shared an outpouring of tributes, recognizing Shapiro’s dedication. Deryck Whibley of Sum 41, for instance, noted how crucial Shapiro was to their band during tough times, saying, “His view was very important to me.” Former band member Nate Brasdell also expressed sadness, recalling Shapiro as a significant influence in his career.

This tragic accident was precipitated after the aircraft, identified as a Cessna 550 Citation, crash-landed around 3:45 AM in the Murphy Canyon area. Initial reports indicated that while the plane crash claimed the six lives, eight residents from the area suffered injuries, thankfully without any fatalities in the neighborhood.

The flight originated in Teterboro, New Jersey, and had a stop in Wichita, Kansas, en route to Montgomery Gibbs Executive Airport. Witnesses described an intense fireball and thick smoke as they were shaken awake by the crash. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wall remarked on the devastation, highlighting the chaotic scene of burning structures and fuel spilling into the streets.

Although no residents were killed, eight were treated for injuries related to smoke inhalation and other effects from the crash. The overall impact of this tragedy leaves a noticeable void in the music industry and among the devastated families.
