China is gaining the upper hand in the new Cold War, and we are allowing it to occur.

The threat posed by China to the United States is complex and extends over a long term, with various aggressive strategies in play. Whether through military upgrades, economic pressure, or initiatives in space and cyber warfare, China’s agenda seems aimed at disrupting U.S. interests, values, security, and global standing.

While U.S. policymakers have largely focused on China’s military threats, it’s essential to note that China’s approach is much broader. There’s a concerted effort to weaken the U.S. economically, politically, culturally, and diplomatically, using a mix of civil and military tactics to expand influence and enhance its geopolitical standing.

In a sense, the U.S. is engaged in a sort of Cold War with China, underscoring the need for a more robust response to China’s aggressive maneuvers.

Shaping Public Perception

A key aspect of this Cold War is China’s attempts to sway American public opinion and cultural views. The Chinese government utilizes a vast array of anonymous social media accounts to project its narrative, foster division among the populace, and silence dissent. Moreover, it funds newspapers in the U.S., serving as a mouthpiece for propaganda while also investing in major media outlets to curb criticism against its policies.

Also noteworthy is how China aims to influence American culture through its backing of select films, like the 2019 movie *Midway*, which received extensive national support.

Similar to the Soviet efforts during the Cold War, China employs all its resources to challenge, suppress, and divide viewpoints regarding its policies. Cultural influence is just one of the tools in its kit.

A striking illustration of China’s tactics can be seen in how it has developed its space capabilities. With significant state-funded backing, alongside economic espionage and coercion, China has enhanced its satellite systems and other technologies, providing strategic advantages for its military and state-owned enterprises. They have even attempted to replicate technology such as Elon Musk’s reusable rocket systems.

These recent activities are merely the latest in a long history of Chinese economic spying that has severely affected commercial space ventures. Despite advocating for peaceful exploration, China actively militarizes its space operations, preparing for future conflicts. The United States certainly needs to step up its response to this ongoing threat.

Attacking Global Institutions

The Chinese government is also pursuing a coordinated effort to expand its influence within international organizations, particularly those aligned with the United Nations. This strategy aims to extend China’s control while stifling international criticism of its actions, complicating diplomatic relations for the U.S. and its allies.

Take, for example, China’s role in UN environmental groups, which has enabled it to quash criticism and block inquiries into its maritime militia operations.

China exploits global fish stocks and often damages coral reefs, while minimizing its substantial contribution to air pollution. The development projects associated with its Belt and Road Initiative frequently neglect environmental concerns. Moreover, it continually seeks to diminish Taiwan’s presence on the international stage and undermine its political system.

Though Chinese leaders may publicly advocate for peaceful relations with the U.S., they are persistently engaged in a campaign to challenge American influence across virtually all spheres—economically, politically, diplomatically, and militarily. This involves a long-term strategy leveraging all available state resources to extend their reach.

In many respects, it appears the country is in the throes of a new Cold War with China. This demands not only a vigilant U.S. government response but also a concerted effort involving civil society, allies, and freedom-loving people globally—a comprehensive strategy. We need to improve how we position America and curb China’s ambitions.
