A recent Cygnal investigation has revealed that the Democratic Party currently lacks a definitive leader, with no single candidate garnering close to a majority support.
In the investigation, respondents were asked, “Do you think you’re the Democratic leader today?”
Interestingly, the primary response came from within the party itself, identifying former Vice President Kamala Harris—who lost to Donald Trump in the 2024 election—as the leader, with only 11% support. Other polls pointed towards Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) being recognized as a leader.
In addition, 9% of respondents chose former President Barack Obama, while both Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) received 8% each. Seven percent named Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) as a leader, and 6% picked Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). Former President Joe Biden was mentioned by just 5% of Democrats, with California Governor Gavin Newsom and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro each receiving 3% support.
Notably, only 1% of Democrats indicated that Harris’ former running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D), was considered a leader.

Overall, 22% of respondents admitted they were unsure about who the party leader was.
Additionally, 12.9% identified Obama as the leader, followed by 9.6% naming Schumer, 7% for Harris, 6% for Ocasio-Cortez, and 5.3% for Booker.
Clearly, there’s a lack of consensus on Democratic leadership.
This survey aligns with a previous CBS News poll indicating growing frustration among Democrats regarding the party’s response to Trump’s presidency.
According to Breitbart News:
The survey explored Democrats’ feelings towards President Trump, revealing that more than half expressed irritation and anxiety about their party’s handling of him—66% and 53%, respectively.
Only 13% reported feeling “slow” about the Democratic president’s management of Trump, with just 9% feeling “satisfied” and 8% “excited.”
A mere 7% felt “safe” due to the Democratic president’s approach to Trump.
Moreover, the Economist/YouGov survey last month indicated that 66% of respondents believe Democrats do not have a clear leader at this time, while another 27% were uncertain and only 7% affirmed that there was a clear leader.
