McDonald’s will close its CosMc’s locations and introduce drinks to the menu.

McDonald’s to Close COSMC Pilot Locations

McDonald’s has announced the closure of all five of its COSMC pilot locations this summer, merely 18 months after debuting the drink-centric initiative, which had initially attracted considerable attention and long drive-thru lines.

The fast-food giant noted that the pilot program aimed to position the company for a more significant entry into the specialized beverage market.

“The main aim of the COSMC test was to create a foundation for understanding the McDonald’s system, and the insights we gained allowed us to connect more closely with our fans,” the company shared recently.

Launched in late 2023, COSMC was intended to delve into the burgeoning drive-thru beverage category, which is currently dominated by chains like Dutch Bros, Scooter’s, and Swig.

In addition, McDonald’s opened a new base in Texas and briefly contemplated expanding with a smaller format store after it closed three larger ones in January.

During a revenue call earlier this month, CEO Chris Kempczinski announced a strategic shift for the company.

“We discovered some intriguing insights through the COSMC test that enhanced our understanding of consumer preferences for customization as well as interests in new emerging beverage categories,” Kempczinski explained to analysts.

Instead of launching a separate brand, McDonald’s plans to integrate COSMC drinks into the menus of existing restaurants across the U.S. These new flavors will be introduced in an in-store test later this year.

Based on insights gathered from the pilot locations, flavors inspired by COSMC will appear at McDonald’s.

A dedicated beverage team is now working to expand efforts nationwide.

McDonald’s emphasized that COSMC would serve as a “learning lab” where new technologies, bold flavors, and quick menu changes can be tested in real customer environments.

The company plans to adapt promptly based on customer feedback and apply those insights going forward.

The standalone COSMC app will be discontinued, and the five stores (four in Texas and one in Illinois) will gradually close starting in late June.

In the meantime, competition in the beverage space is heating up. Taco Bell is speeding up its own drink initiative, Live MasCafé, putting pressure on McDonald’s to respond swiftly in this rapidly evolving market.
