DOJ Allows Boeing to Avoid Felony Charges for Fatal Plane Crashes

Boeing Avoids Criminal Charges in Fraud Cases

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced it will allow Boeing to evade criminal prosecutions tied to fraud cases arising from two tragic plane crashes. This information was revealed in a court filing released on Friday.

The DOJ has reached a settlement with Boeing that mandates the company to pay fines totaling $243.6 million and $444.5 million in compensation to the crash victims’ families. This agreement helps Boeing steer clear of potential felony charges. The crashes involved Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, which collectively led to the deaths of 346 people due to mechanical issues on Boeing’s largest aircraft, the 737.

In a statement reflecting their pain, one family expressed, “This decision doesn’t ease the unbearable sorrow caused by this tragedy, but we believe it’s crucial for our emotional well-being to resolve this matter and concentrate on healing.” They noted the complexities of the situation and agreed that finalizing this agreement could be a step toward closure.

The court also indicated that Boeing’s Committee members should engage with the affected families, seeking their input regarding the company’s actions, compliance, safety protocols, and quality programs. A formal complaint is anticipated to be filed next week, likely to be dismissed.

The fraud allegations trace back to a 2021 settlement involving accusations against Boeing related to deceptive practices with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). As part of that agreement, Boeing was required to pay $500 million to the victims’ families and $1.7 billion to affected customers.

In May 2024, the DOJ identified instances of Boeing breaching the settlement terms, particularly by allegedly failing to implement an ethics program aimed at preventing fraud.

Boeing has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding these developments.
