Stormy Night for Knicks Fans
It seems like the Knicks could use some magic to change the weather—if only it could translate to their performance on the court.
This past Friday night, a group of devoted Knicks enthusiasts braved the rain at a watch party in Central Park, hoping for a better outcome as their team faced off against the Indiana Pacers in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Unfortunately, disappointment lingered as the Knicks suffered yet another loss at Madison Square Garden, leaving over a thousand fans soaked and disheartened.
“I have faith,” said Cedar Shawhan Zucker, an 18-year-old from the Upper West Side, though he added, “I don’t feel good.” He felt the team needed more than just their star player to turn things around, saying, “Branson can’t be our only savior. We need to engage others and take some shots.”
Other fans were already lamenting the home-court advantage lost, their spirits dampened by the back-to-back defeats. “It was very crushing,” expressed Zephan Rya, also 18 and from the Upper East Side.
Despite the gloomy outcome, spirits at the watch party remained somewhat hopeful, even as the Knicks floundered in the second quarter, which stretched an agonizing ten minutes. Amidst the chaos, fans called out, “Fix Sound! Fix Sound!” as the audio quality struggled but eventually improved.
As the game progressed, the fans rallied together, chanting “Defense!” and cheering for Jalen Brunson and Mitchell Robinson, who, despite the loss, put on valiant performances that kept some energy in the crowd.
After the game wrapped up, the rain continued, and fans shuffled away from the park, some visibly upset. This wasn’t the only outdoor event that night—a simultaneous watch party took place at Citifield while the Mets were delayed in their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Following their previous week’s victory against the Boston Celtics, this larger watch party venue had become a hub of celebration. Fans had indeed made quite the scene, climbing poles and even burning Celtics jerseys, all while cheering on their team.
Now, the Knicks are on their way to Indiana, gearing up for Game 3 at the fieldhouse on Sunday night. Here’s hoping for a breath of fresh air—both in the weather and on the court.
