Bird flu detected at New Jersey live poultry market, authorities report

Avian Influenza Case Detected in Essex County

A case of avian influenza was confirmed at a live bird market in Essex County on Friday, as announced by the Governor’s office. Approximately 123 chickens will be euthanized due to this positive diagnosis, which is known to be highly contagious among domestic poultry species, according to officials from the New Jersey Department of Agriculture.

The market will undergo cleaning and disinfection and will remain closed for an unspecified duration until the quarantine is lifted and the birds are restocked. The exact location of the market hasn’t been disclosed.

Additionally, market workers are being monitored for potential exposure and symptoms by health officials at both the local and state levels.

Authorities have stated that no live poultry suspected of infection was sold to the public.

This isn’t the first time avian influenza has caused concerns in the area; on May 13, officials noted that more than 1,000 birds were euthanized at another live bird market in Essex County after a positive test result for the virus.

The previous outbreak was contained to that specific market, which was temporarily closed until the quarantine was resolved.

The first positive case of bird flu among domestic poultry in New Jersey since 2023 was reported earlier this year at a live bird market in Union County.

Avian influenza remains a significant concern as it has a considerable impact on the poultry and dairy industries, with millions of birds and cattle affected across the country since the onset of the recent outbreaks.

While avian influenza poses a low risk to humans, most infections occur following prolonged and close exposure. The CDC has reported mild cases in people, including a more severe case that resulted in a death in Louisiana earlier this year.

For safety, properly cooked poultry and eggs, heated to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit, are deemed safe for consumption.
