President Donald Trump recently discussed ways to conclude the ongoing war in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while also hosting South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House. During this meeting, Trump brought up concerns regarding the treatment of white farmers in South Africa, even showing a video that supposedly depicted a burial site for about 1,000 white farmers.
Trump has voiced claims that these farmers have faced violence and been displaced from their lands. He insinuated that these burial sites are respected by those who visit to pay tribute to the deceased.
While Ramaphosa expressed confusion about the location of the site Trump referenced, stating, “I want to know where it is, because I’ve never seen it,” Trump maintained that it was an important matter. The White House later clarified that the video had been misrepresented and was more about a memorial demonstration related to the murder of a farming couple rather than a burial ground.
Peace Talks with Putin
In a phone call with Putin on Monday, Trump moved discussions forward regarding peace talks to address the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This conversation occurred shortly after negotiations between the two countries took place in Turkey—the first since 2022. Following the call, Trump indicated that both parties would aim for a ceasefire, adding that the details of negotiations should be managed between Ukraine and Russia.
He remarked that it’s important for the parties involved to negotiate their own terms, and seemed optimistic about the prospects for resolution. However, he also characterized the situation as primarily a European issue, saying, “It should have been a European situation.”
Condemnation of Anti-Semitism
On another note, the White House condemned a recent shooting incident at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., labeling it as anti-Semitic. A gunman killed two employees leaving an event, prompting an outcry from Trump and other administration officials urging an end to such violence.
Trump expressed his condolences for the victims, stating that hate must not have a place in America, while the White House affirmed that the perpetrators would be prosecuted.
Tariff Threats Against the EU
This week, Trump also threatened to impose 50% tariffs on imports from the European Union, citing frustrations in trade negotiations. His administration recently coordinated different tariff levels, which included a notable increase on Chinese products while indicating that interactions with the EU have not yielded satisfactory proposals.
Trump highlighted the various trade barriers and unfair practices leading to a significant trade deficit with the EU, emphasizing that the risks and penalties imposed on American businesses are unacceptable. His rhetoric fuels ongoing tensions as he aims to negotiate more favorable terms for American interests.
