Many seek mental health guidance from ChatGPT despite caution from experts.

The emergence of AI chatbots in the realm of mental health is stirring up mixed feelings. Recently, significant numbers of TikTok users, around 16.7 million, have discussed utilizing ChatGPT as an alternative therapeutic tool. Yet, while this trend grows, numerous mental health professionals are raising concerns regarding the efficacy and safety of such approaches for treating conditions like anxiety and depression.

User @ChristinAzozolya shared her experience on TikTok, noting that when anxiety strikes, she often turns to ChatGPT instead of bombarding her parents or friends with texts. She finds it provides an immediate sense of relief that feels elusive in her social interactions.

Another user, @karly.bailey, describes ChatGPT as a “crutch” for affordable therapy, especially as someone working for a startup without health insurance. She writes out her feelings in detail, likening the interaction to confiding in a close friend, and claims the advice she receives is quite helpful.

This behavior isn’t isolated. A study from Tebra shows that many people are more inclined to consult an AI chatbot than engage in traditional therapeutic treatments. In places like the UK, the steep cost of private counseling—upwards of £400, or about $540—combined with long National Health Service (NHS) wait times make AI tools appealing.

Over 16,500 individuals in the UK languished on waiting lists for mental health services for up to 18 months, illustrating the ongoing challenges of accessing timely care.

Critics, however, point out the downsides of relying on AI for mental health support. They argue that while these tools may be convenient, they lack the essential human empathy necessary for effectively addressing crises. Dr. Kojo Sarfo, a mental health expert, noted that while AI can mimic some therapeutic interactions, it cannot replace a licensed professional’s nuanced understanding and ability to provide tailored support.

While some specialized GPTs are designed for offering comfort and support, they still fall short of comprehensive, individualized care. The monthly fee for services like ChatGPT Plus may seem affordable, especially compared to traditional therapy, but the platform lacks the capability to diagnose or prescribe medication, leaving significant gaps in care.

Dr. Sarfo expressed his concern about individuals possibly misusing AI as a substitute for necessary treatments or medications and stressed the importance of human intervention in mental health care. He voiced fears that individuals might rely too heavily on chatbots, particularly when more significant issues are at play.

Further, Dr. Christine Yu Moutier, a leading figure at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, cautioned against the use of AI for mental health advice. She noted a critical lack of research into how these technologies may influence suicide risk and behaviors. The inherent limitations of AI could lead to misinterpretations of serious issues, ultimately hindering those in genuine need of help.

In summary, the potential for AI in providing mental health support offers both exciting opportunities and significant risks that need careful consideration.
