Universal Orlando Resort Unveils New Epic Universe Park
Can teams from Super Mario Bros., Frankenstein, and Harry Potter triumph in a magical kingdom? Universal Orlando Resort recently launched a new park, a remarkable $7 billion addition, in central Florida.
Dubbed Epic Universe, this is Universal’s third theme park in Orlando and marks the first significant new theme park opening in the U.S. in over 25 years. Insiders in the entertainment industry believe that Epic could significantly alter the landscape of theme parks.
Brian Glenn, the editor of Inside Universal, describes the Epic Universe as Universal’s boldest move since the launch of Islands of Adventure. He suggests it aims to redefine the theme park experience by incorporating cutting-edge technology and exciting intellectual properties. Notably, Epic Universe is seven times larger than its sister parks.
This new park is Universal’s boldest challenge in their longstanding competition with Disney, in a tourism industry worth $92.5 billion. Epic Universe features over 50 attractions based on pop culture icons, including beloved franchises like Harry Potter and Nintendo. With 11 rides, the park includes innovative technologies, such as a truckless ride system and augmented reality features.
Dennis Spegel, founder of International Theme Park Services, emphasizes the potential of Epic Universe to set new standards in the theme park realm. He notes that it’s an ambitious and perhaps a revolutionary approach to what theme parks can offer.
Spanning over 750 acres, Epic Universe was developed under Comcast’s ownership, touted as “The Most Ambitious Park Experience ever created.” First introduced in August 2019, this park reflects a significant investment by Universal aimed at competing with Disney’s stature in the industry.
Learning from past experiences has also been a focus. Popular YouTuber Peter Ciretta noted that Universal had previously relied too much on “screen rides,” which can lead to motion sickness. However, it appears Epic Universe may have addressed this issue by balancing immersive screens with animatronics in rides like Harry Potter and the Battle of the Ministry.
The detail-oriented design extends to everything at Epic Universe. For instance, more than 40 hours of original background music has been specially composed for the park, adapting throughout the day to enhance the experience.
Various technologies are integrated into the rides. The Werewolf Curse ride uses a truck circular car, while the Stardust Racer coaster can reach speeds of up to 62 mph. Additionally, the Super Nintendo World features rides that utilize augmented reality headsets, offering a distinctive racing experience.
Spegel mentions that Universal has trained around 14,000 employees on the workings of new rides and technology, emphasizing their commitment to providing a seamless guest experience. However, some technical glitches have emerged during preview events, prompting complaints about ride reliability, particularly on the Harry Potter attraction.
Despite these hiccups, Universal hopes the diverse array of intellectual properties will drive visitors back. Characters from franchises like Harry Potter and Nintendo resonate deeply, especially with younger generations. This connection might rival that of Disney’s beloved characters.
While Disney still leads the market—48 million guests in 2024 compared to 20 million at Universal—Epic Universe may attract an additional 5-8 million visitors in its first year, potentially taking some traffic away from Disney. This shift could put pressure on Disney, which has faced its own challenges, particularly with rising ticket prices and notable criticisms related to its management decisions and political controversies in Florida.
Although Disney has not opened a new park in 27 years, plans for a fifth park in Orlando are underway, alongside a new venture in the Middle East. The introduction of Epic Universe could prompt Disney to rethink its strategy and innovate new attractions.
Overall, the competition between these two giants may ultimately benefit theme park enthusiasts. As one insider notes, visitors could enjoy experiences at both parks, making the most of what each has to offer.
