Trump Raises Concerns About Foreign Students at Harvard
President Donald Trump intensified his political agenda on Sunday concerning anti-Semitism and support for racial issues at Harvard University. He emphasized taxpayer funding for foreign students attending the school.
Trump pointed out, “Why does Harvard claim that nearly 31% of its students are from other countries? These nations aren’t exactly friendly to the US, yet they pay nothing for their students’ education, and that’s been the case for a long time. No one informed us about this!”
His remarks align with ongoing efforts from his administration to reconsider Harvard’s privileges regarding international student registration. The president added, “It’s a reasonable request to ask for transparency, especially when Harvard receives billions in funding but isn’t cooperating. I want to know who the students are and where they come from. Harvard has $53 billion at its disposal. They should utilize that instead of relying on federal funds!”
Indeed, Harvard boasts an endowment of around $53 billion, making it the wealthiest university globally.
The university’s financing page notes that the donations comprise over 14,000 funds. These funds support various initiatives such as undergraduate education, graduate fellowships, and faculty positions, alongside financial aid for students.
Additionally, the administration suggests that Harvard is working with China in managing its foreign student program. In response, the university filed a lawsuit on Friday aiming to prevent the administration from banning the registration of international students.
The lawsuit depicts Harvard as an innocent party affected by the administration’s actions against anti-Semitism on campus and describes the demands from the White House regarding collaboration with the Chinese Communist Party.
Harvard argues that the government’s recent actions have led to a significant decline in the number of international students, crucial contributors to its community. “Without these students, Harvard isn’t truly Harvard,” the university claims in its legal filing.
A federal judge ruled on Friday to temporarily halt the administration’s cancellation of student visa programs while the case is pending. The lawsuit claims that over 7,000 student visa holders are impacted and highlights violations of the First Amendment, due process, and the Administrative Procedure Act.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initiated the termination of Harvard’s visa program after the university reportedly failed to provide required documentation related to student visa holders.
There are reports indicating that DHS sought detailed records on student protests and disciplinary actions over the past five years to ascertain any involvement in threats against fellow students and faculty.
So far, the administration has withheld nearly $3 billion in funding, arguing that Harvard has inadequately addressed concerns about anti-Semitism on its campus.
DHS Secretary Christy Noem stated, “This administration holds Harvard accountable for the violence and anti-Semitism prevalent on its campus, as well as its collaboration with the Chinese Communist Party.”
