Dana Bash shares difficult news with Hakeem Jeffries: 'It's quite tough'

Washington, DC, currently seems to have no Democrats in a favorable light. Under the leadership of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, their average approval ratings are notably low: 46.1% and 28.6%, respectively.

An Economists and YouGov vote indicated that as of May 25th, the overall disapproval rating for the party stood at 58.3%.

Bad news for the Democrats continues, with CNN anchor Dana Bash pressing Jeffries over the weekend.

A new CNN survey conducted by SSRS revealed how most Americans perceive the Democrats. Only 16% view them as strong leaders, while 40% think the GOP has “strong leaders.”

When asked which party “can get things done,” 19% of respondents chose Democrats, while 36% opted for the GOP.

Interestingly, some respondents answered both questions with “neither party.”

Among self-identified Democrats, just 39% believe their party has a strong leader, and 13% acknowledge other parties as having stronger leadership. On the Republican side, a striking 85% view their party as having a strong leader, with only 3% endorsing the Democratic leadership.

Confidence levels among Democrats were similarly low. When queried about effectiveness, 49% thought their party could accomplish tasks, while only 8% said the GOP was more effective. Conversely, 81% of Republicans felt their party was effective, and just 3% of Democrats expressed the same about theirs.

In various policy areas, such as the economy, immigration, and crime, respondents preferred GOP views over those of the Democrats.

However, Democrats retain advantages on issues like protecting American democracy, abortion rights, race and LGBTQ+ issues, and climate change.

Despite these poll findings, Jeffries questioned Trump’s popularity during an interview with Bash, suggesting he was “the most popular president in American history.”

Bash highlighted the stark reality of low confidence in Democratic leadership and effectiveness while speaking to Jeffries.

“Only 19% of Americans think your party can get things done, and merely 16% view your party as having strong leaders,” Bash pointed out. “How do you turn that around?”

After a moment’s pause, Jeffries acknowledged the challenges, stating, “Yes, we don’t have a presidency now, so we’ll be continually challenged in the months after the presidential election.”

Democrats have pinpointed various causes behind voter frustrations, urging Bash that “they’re irritated, you and Democrats.”

Jeffries attempted to deflect accountability, remarking, “Of course people are unhappy with the system.”
