Target Adjusts Pride Offerings Amid Criticism
As businesses recognize what is termed “Pride Month,” retailers like Target seem to be pulling back on their product lines. This shift comes after years of scrutiny, particularly for promoting children’s items that align with transgender themes and pride-related apparel.
In 2021, Target faced backlash for its approach, which many felt pushed a progressive agenda aimed at children. By 2023, with the Biden administration advocating for various gender expressions, products were increasingly being labeled as suitable for “multiple” identities. A report by Breitbart noted that even mainstream media began to take notice of this trend.
The Associated Press highlighted that one particular location in New York City showcased a child’s black swimsuit tagged as “thoughtfully fits multiple body types and gender representations.” This claim is also mirrored on their website, where little girls are featured in specific outfits. Moreover, Target’s Pride section includes several pride-themed swimsuits for kids, confirmed by their online store.
For instance, children’s swimsuits in teal and lime green are adorned with pride tags that emphasize comfort and confidence, while also stating they “thoughtfully fit multiple body types.”
In addition, a variety of Pride-themed leggings, shirts, onesies, and accessories are available for children. Notably, rainbow toddler leggings are marketed as “perfect for celebrations, parades, or other events.”
The controversy surrounding the so-called “tuck-friendly” swimsuits for adults also led to reconsideration on Target’s part regarding their product offerings.
A quick look at the current Target website reveals a markedly different selection. It appears they are making an effort to respect consumer preferences.
In the “LGBT Pride: Children’s Clothing” section, only two items are presently listed: Panda Hug Ring Rainbow Socks and a grey girl’s shirt, priced at $17.99.
Currently, the online store seems to be expanding its adult offerings, albeit they are still quite limited compared to previous years. The “Celebrate Pride” section lists a total of 56 items including pride-themed adult tops, dog bandanas, cat toys, hats, pins, jewelry sets, stickers, and party supplies. The selection appears to have toned down compared to last year’s offerings.
This moderation from Target shouldn’t be surprising, as they altered their LGBTQ-themed products in 2024 following significant pushback from prior years. Reports noted that only about half of the company’s outlets carried LGBTQ-themed items, while many were exclusively available online.
Nonetheless, not all companies are following Target’s lead. For example, MAC Cosmetics has partnered with transgender pop star Kim Petras to launch the Viva Glam campaign and a new lip gloss in celebration of Pride Month. Meanwhile, Sesame Street engaged in its own festivities at the start of the month to honor LGBTQ pride.
