Increasing numbers of Americans recognize significant distinctions between the Republican and Democratic Parties: Survey

A rising number of Americans believe that there’s a meaningful distinction between Republicans and Democrats, according to a recent survey. An overwhelming 81% of participants indicated that the differences were significant, while just 18% felt the parties were “almost the same.”

This 63-point disparity marks a notable increase from a 44-point gap observed in the latter part of 2023.

Over the past decade, more people have recognized these differences in party identity, although the shift hasn’t been as drastic as it was last year.

Back in September 2014, a similar survey revealed a 29-point gap, with 64% of respondents acknowledging significant differences between the parties compared to 35% who thought they were largely similar.

Interestingly, about 12 years ago, survey responses were fairly comparable; 65% believed there were key differences, whereas 32% saw them as quite alike.

Current data reveals that various demographic groups express similar beliefs about the disparity, though some are less inclined to acknowledge it.

For instance, 70% of independents assert there are significant party differences, while the numbers are even higher among Republicans at 89% and Democrats at 92%.

When examining income levels, 73% of respondents earning less than $50,000 a year perceive notable differences. Comparatively, that figure rises to 89% among those making between $50,000 and $100,000, and to 87% for those with incomes over $100,000.

White respondents reported a higher tendency to acknowledge the differences, with 86% agreeing, compared to 74% of people of color.

Notably, 90% of university graduates believe there’s a significant difference between the parties, compared to 77% of individuals without a degree.

The survey, which included 2,539 adults, was conducted from May 5 to May 26, with a margin of error of 2.7 percentage points.
