Bold Ukrainian drone strike on Russian bombers surprises before peace talks in Istanbul

Negotiations in Istanbul Following Drone Strikes

Officials from Russia and Ukraine convened in Istanbul, Turkey, to discuss a potential peace agreement after a significant drone operation—dubbed “Spider’s Web”—resulted in the destruction of Russian bombers over the weekend.

Ukraine conducted the operation using drones that were cleverly concealed on top of a wooden shed near a military installation deep within Russian territory. When activated, the hatch opened, and the drone launched to target military assets.

One social media clip showed a drone striking a Russian aircraft. Ukraine reported approximately 41 planes were either destroyed or damaged, while Russian sources disputed this number, claiming it was significantly lower.

The attack has been compared to a “Pearl Harbor” moment for Russia, akin to the severe losses experienced by the U.S. base in Hawaii during World War II. Some outlets labeled it as “bold” and even “stunning.”

In the face of these attacks, Russian officials have continued to insist on major concessions from Ukraine in exchange for a ceasefire during the Istanbul talks. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump, aiming for a resolution, has warned of potential sanctions against Russia if no agreement is reached.

The discussions lasted only about an hour before both sides parted ways. Ukrainian representatives stated they rejected the terms proposed by Russia, labeling them a demand for surrender.

However, both countries did reach an agreement to facilitate the exchange of prisoners of war and the return of approximately 12,000 individuals with war-related disabilities.

Ukrainian President Voldy Meezelensky expressed his satisfaction with the drone operation via social media, noting that military targets were hit, specifically equipment used in attacks against Ukraine. He mentioned that 117 drones were involved and that they struck about 34% of “strategic cruise missile carriers positioned at air bases.”

While he expressed a desire to avoid conflict, he pointed out that on March 11, proposals for a complete and unconditional ceasefire had been made, and it was Russia who opted to pursue the war further.

Ukrainian security estimates indicate that the financial toll of the attacks on Russia exceeds $7 billion.

Trump recently took to social media to caution Russia about prolonging its military actions, stating, “What Vladimir Putin doesn’t realize is that if it hadn’t been for me, something really bad would have already happened to Russia, and I mean it’s really bad.” He added, “He’s playing with fire!”
