Progressive Democrats spoke out against anti-Semitism following the violent attacks in Boulder, Colorado, where demonstrators advocating for the return of Israeli hostages faced aggression. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, expressed fear over the incidents, stating, “My thoughts are with our Jewish community and the victims nationwide. There’s a troubling rise in anti-Semitism, and we have a duty to confront it wherever it occurs.”
Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has previously faced criticism over her comments on Israel, also condemned the violence. “I mourn with the victims and their families,” she said. “Violence against anyone is unacceptable, and we need to reject all forms of hatred.”
Donald Trump characterized the attacks as “unacceptable” and emphasized that deportations should continue.
The House has seen previous disputes, including a 2023 resolution aimed at Omar for alleged anti-Israel sentiments, highlighting a broader tension within political circles regarding comments on Israel. Rashida Tlaib, another member of “The Squad,” called the acts in Boulder “horrifying,” urging a community stance against violence.
Newly elected progressive Democrats also made statements. “It’s unsettling to see anti-Semitism manifest so violently in Boulder,” said Rep. Greg Casar from Texas. “I’m thinking of the victims and their families, as well as the Jewish community across the nation.”
Rep. Delia C. Ramirez expressed sorrow over the attacks and mentioned the importance of peace and community safety. “Both local violence and turmoil abroad won’t move us closer to harmony. We can find a path through shared humanity,” she said.
Rep. Maxwell Frost condemned the Boulder attacks, noting its frightening similarities to recent violence, including incidents involving Israeli embassy staff in D.C. “My heart goes out to the victims and their families. Hatred has no place here,” he stated.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley, also part of the original “Squad,” said, “The anti-Semitic violence in Boulder is appalling. Attacking innocent people is unjust and will never bring about true justice. We must put an end to this.” She added that Trump’s divisive approach shouldn’t deter their community strength.
Interestingly, as of Monday afternoon, Rep. Summer Lee from Pennsylvania had not made a public statement regarding the attack. Her office did not respond to inquiries at that time.
