Virginia’s Supreme Court overturns the Democrats’ redistricting plan 4-3

Report claims Spanberger's redistricting proposal is an attempt by Democrats to gain power.

Virginia Supreme Court Invalidates Redistricting, Sparking Republican Celebrations

Republicans reacted with both joy and ridicule following a significant ruling by the Virginia Supreme Court, which challenged Democrats’ rapid attempt to limit Republican representation in congressional districts. According to the lead plaintiff, the verdict confirmed the concerns of those opposing the redistricting plan.

The court issued a 4-3 decision that voided Democrats’ extensive redistricting efforts. Justice D. Arthur Kelsey pointed out that Attorney General Jay Jones and his colleagues did not adhere to state law regarding redistricting timelines, which included a provision seen as “election interference,” rather than focusing on political outcomes.

Celebrations began almost instantly as Republicans and supporters of the “Vote No” campaign poked fun at Senate President Pro Tem Lily Louise Lucas, often viewed as the mastermind behind the gerrymandering tactic. By the way, it’s interesting to note that Lucas’s office and cannabis dispensary were recently raided by the FBI.

Former Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, a Republican leader against redistricting alongside Jason Miyares, took to Twitter to celebrate the outcome, expressing his thoughts in an analytical flurry.

Meanwhile, Cuccinelli mocked Lucas, who has a reputation for vehemently attacking redistricting critics, including Senator Ted Cruz, suggesting that Virginia’s GOP delegation might end up in unexpected careers at McDonald’s or missing out on key chairmanships.

In further tweets, he emphasized the court’s reasoning for not intervening before the referendum, referencing a dialogue between the judge and the legal representatives about the outcome, stating that the attorney acknowledged the election results were irrelevant.

Senate Minority Leader Ryan McDougle, leading the case, told reporters that the ruling should receive applause from all Virginians. He asserted, “You can’t change the Constitution unlawfully,” reiterating that the court’s decision reinforced the rules that govern the General Assembly.

“All Virginians are winners,” McDougle concluded.

House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that today’s ruling reaffirms the importance of following the law regarding constitutional amendments. He noted that voters need the chance to make informed decisions on these matters.

Representative Ben Kline, whose seat may be threatened by new district maps, characterized the decision as correct, mentioning that it was anticipated all along. “Democrats have broken their own laws, exceeded deadlines, and misled voters in support of the referendum,” Kline said, underscoring that Virginia voters had already rejected gerrymandering by creating an independent map-drawing commission in 2020.

On a side note, observers noted that Justice Kelsey had previously been appointed by Democratic Senator Mark Warner, who supported the redistricting initiative.

Former Governor Glenn Youngkin commented that justice had been served, accusing certain Democrats of willfully disregarding constitutional principles and undermining the rights of Virginians.

Conversely, Virginia Democratic Senator Timothy Kaine criticized the court’s ruling, arguing that it obstructed the public’s choice, insisting they need to succeed on the Republican-drawn maps instead.

With the situation unfolding, it remains unclear whether or how Democrats might appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court for further action.
