Maxine Waters’ Campaign Fined for Violating Finance Rules

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) faces a fine of $68,000 due to infractions involving campaign finance regulations, according to multiple reports.

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) announced on Friday that Waters’ 2020 Campaign Committee, which rallied support for her initiatives, had breached “several campaign finance laws.” The commission noted that the campaign failed to properly report both receipts and payments for the 2020 calendar year.

In response to the fine, Waters’ campaign has agreed to pay the amount and partake in a training program organized by a political committee.

As reported, the FEC stated that there were discrepancies including the inability to accurately report financials for the 2020 calendar year, acceptance of excessive contributions, and making prohibited cash expenditures.

A document specified that the campaign would need to provide proof of required registration and attendance at the relevant training to the FEC.

It has been reported that the FEC found that Waters’ committee accepted over $19,000 in excess donations and incurred around $7,000 in prohibited cash expenditures from a minor cash fund.

The attorney for Waters’ campaign attributed the mistakes to “limited availability and resources of staff” amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Notably, a bipartisan vote by the FEC occurred on April 29, right before a transition period when the agency faced a shortage of commissioners after the resignation of Republican commissioner Allen Dickerson.

Waters’ attorney conveyed to the FEC last year that any errors made were not intentional, emphasizing they primarily stemmed from staffing challenges during the pandemic.

Additionally, reports from December 2022 indicated that the FEC noted payments totaling $8,000 sent to Karen Waters’ company, Progressive Connections, among other expenses. This revelation followed the disclosure that her daughter’s firm had received over $1 million from the campaign since 2003.
