Texas Tech surprisingly ends Oklahoma's chances for a softball five-peat

Texas Tech Advances to Women’s College World Series Championship

Texas Tech secured a spot in the Women’s College World Series Championship Series after an intense game, highlighted by a key moment in the seventh inning when Oklahoma State hit a two-run home run.

In a pivotal play, Red Raiders infielder Lauren All Red hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing outfielder Mihia Davis to score from third base.

This match was highly anticipated, featuring two outstanding pitchers, including Nijaree Canady, who has been recognized as NFCA Pitcher of the Year, going head-to-head against Oklahoma, a team that has dominated the Women’s College World Series in recent years.

Canady continued her impressive performance in Monday’s semifinal against Oklahoma, pitching the entire seven innings. She gave up two runs, five hits, and struck out eight batters out of 28 faced.

The Red Raiders starter didn’t allow a hit until nearly the middle of the second inning, showing strong command early in the game.

Texas Tech took an early lead, 2-0, and maintained that advantage until the seventh inning.

However, Oklahoma’s Abbey Dayton hit a home run to tie the game at two, setting the stage for a dramatic finish for the Red Raiders in the bottom of that inning.

This victory marks a historic moment for Texas Tech, as it is the first time the program has reached the Softball National Championship, coinciding with Jerry Grasco’s inaugural year as head coach.

Prior to Saturday’s game, Canady had an impressive 32 wins and led all Division I softball players with an astounding ERA of 0.86.

After a successful season at Stanford, Canady transferred to Texas Tech and signed a lucrative one-million-dollar contract with The Matador Club, a NIL collective affiliated with the university. She played a crucial role in leading Stanford to back-to-back World Series appearances before making the move.
