CNN Faces Criticism Over Claims of Palestinian Deaths

CNN sparked controversy on Tuesday by reporting that “dozens” of Palestinians were killed near an aid distribution site in Gaza, despite Israeli denials and the history of Hamas propaganda.

Israeli government spokesman David Mensah addressed the media, stating:

Following our demands, led by Ambassador Mike Huckabee, for CNN and others to retract false claims regarding the tragedies at the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) site, we discussed the situation that erupted on Sunday.

CNN’s report indicated, “On the third day of shooting, health officials claimed that dozens of Palestinians were killed near the aid distribution point in Gaza.” They cited Gaza’s Ministry of Health, which is widely considered to be under Hamas control and has a track record of disseminating sensationalized information. This “ministry” asserted that “the Israeli army set fire to Palestinians approaching the Tel Sultan distribution site in Rafah.”

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) clarified that their troops fired from a half-kilometer distance away from the site, responding to individuals who ignored warning shots.

The IDF stated: “Our forces have not obstructed civilians accessing the humanitarian site. Warning shots were directed approximately 0.5 km away from the site at a few individuals who posed a danger.” CNN, however, only presented a fragment of the IDF statement, neglecting to convey the denial of the central allegation and dismissing confirmations from GHF that aid was successfully distributed to civilians.

CNN added: “This incident marks the third consecutive day of fatalities on the way to the GHF distribution point.”

Notably, the Trump administration has endorsed the GHF as an alternative to traditional UN aid distribution, criticizing the UN for being manipulated by Hamas, who allegedly misappropriate resources meant for Palestinians, enriching themselves in the process.

The GHF supports Israeli military efforts against Hamas while continuing to assist Palestinians. This stands against the interests of Hamas, the UN, and, to some extent, the media.

On Monday, the BBC criticized certain reports that misrepresented Hamas’ claims, yet, similar to CNN, it still circulated those claims on Tuesday.

Update: Dr. Johnny Moore from GHF stated to the media that the event “did not occur on our site, but rather outside the secure corridor leading to it.” He emphasized that the IDF was transparent in its media interactions, contrasting with Hamas, which he accused of orchestrating a global misinformation initiative that some mainstream media outlets are participating in.

Dr. Moore highlighted the necessity for Palestinians to adhere to the secure corridors designated by the IDF for accessing aid.

“Some individuals seem resistant to correction,” he remarked, alluding to the erroneous media coverage.
