FBI Immigration Arrests Surge Under Director Kash Patel

Since January, the FBI has made over 10,500 immigration-related arrests, according to recently analyzed data. This figure, drawing from FBI records, highlights the significant uptick attributed to Kash Patel’s efforts in aligning with the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

Notable operations, particularly at Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard in late May, resulted in around 32 arrests. Among those apprehended were members of the MS-13 gang and Luciano Pereira Deoliveira, who faced serious charges related to child abuse.

Patel frequently shares updates about these operations on social media. For instance, in April, the Sacramento Field Office’s investigation led to the capture of Harpreet Singh, who allegedly had connections to terrorism and had entered the U.S. illegally in 2022.

There’s a broader context too: since January 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has undergone adjustments, including the reassignment of agents to support immigration enforcement. Erica Knight, an adviser to Patel, mentioned an increasing focus on criminal immigrant arrests due to rising illegal migration during the current administration. “With over 10,000 arrests, the department clearly hasn’t ignored the border crisis,” she stated, emphasizing a commitment to public safety and addressing violent criminal networks.

The data indicates a significant number of the FBI’s approximately 38,000 employees have participated in immigration enforcement tasks at various field offices, especially in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Houston, and San Antonio.

Under Patel’s leadership, the FBI has engaged in joint operations with state and federal law enforcement to tackle organized crime. For instance, a task force in Virginia recently announced arrests of 342 individuals associated with MS-13. However, some charges were later dismissed.

A retired FBI agent, reflecting on the shift towards immigration enforcement, expressed mixed feelings among agents. Some feel pressured by this new direction, while others see it as a necessary response to the challenges posed by immigration issues. “The FBI’s involvement in cases like this shows we’re in a unique situation,” he noted, considering it unusual yet essential.

The retired agent emphasized that the FBI’s involvement could provide significant intelligence-gathering opportunities, potentially helping to navigate the complexities of immigration enforcement more effectively.
