The post-race celebration antics of 16-year-old Clara Adams have sparked quite a debate, especially after she became a rising star at the CIF state championships. This moment was caught on video, showing her excitement as her track dreams came to life.
Adams, a sprinter from North Salinas High School in California, took a page out of the book of sprinting legend Maurice Greene. After clinching victory in the 400-meter event on Saturday, she celebrated by dousing herself with a fire extinguisher, a nod to Greene’s iconic celebration.
However, CIF officials did not share in her joy. They disqualified her, stripping her of the title she had just earned. This moment, which should have been a highlight, turned quickly into an incident that made headlines.
In the footage, you can see her in the infield, a bit separated from the rest, firing off the extinguisher onto her shoes. It didn’t take long for CIF officials to notice and approach her, pulling her away from the scene.
Ultimately, the celebration was deemed unsportsmanlike, leading to her disqualification right before she was set to compete in the 200-meter race—a race many expected her to win.
Her father, David, shared his thoughts on the incident, voicing his displeasure about how the situation unfolded. He remarked that when he saw her use the extinguisher, it was simply a celebration, and he felt the officials overreacted. “The crowd went wild, everybody loved it… but some officials weren’t on board,” he said.
Despite the backlash, Adams does have a significant supporter: Maurice Greene himself. He expressed his approval of her celebration and voiced hope for her to have her title reinstated.
Greene had famously used a similar celebration back in 2004 when he won the 100-meter dash at the Home Depot Invitational. Reflecting on the current incident, he noted, “When I heard about it, I thought, ‘This girl who ran 400 took inspiration from me.’ If it’s just for fun and doesn’t bother anyone, I’d say let her celebrate.”
