McMahon Defends Trump’s Actions Against Harvard at Senate Hearing

During a Senate Budget subcommittee meeting, Education Secretary Linda McMahon stood by President Donald Trump’s initiatives aimed at reforming Harvard University. This occurred amidst extensive questioning from Senator Chris Murphy, who expressed strong criticism regarding the administration’s stance against Harvard.

Murphy began his inquiries by suggesting that the directives issued by the Trump administration to Harvard lacked clarity. “You told [Harvard] they needed to wrap up all diversity programs, yet also needed to implement diversity in perspective,” he pointed out.

He further challenged McMahon’s stance, asking, “How is it possible to demand the end of all diversity programs while promoting diversity in perspective?”

In response, McMahon clarified, “The diversity initiative we aimed to eliminate revolves around DEI programs that seemed to pit one group against another.”

Murphy pressed on: “Is diversity in perspective considered a diversity program?”

McMahon countered, saying, “A variety of perspectives equals an exchange of ideas. Currently, Harvard has only about 3% conservative faculty. Is that sufficient diversity of perspective?”

Murphy shifted the conversation to the authorities backing the Trump administration’s actions, questioning how certain policies were allowed to “microcontrol” Harvard’s diversity efforts. McMahon responded, “The regulation in question is Title VI. That’s why we either filed cases, reimbursed them, or paused funding aimed at Harvard and Columbia.”

Murphy concluded his questioning by conveying his confusion regarding the civil rights law, which he believed shouldn’t be invoked to micromanage campus diversity perspectives: “I do not understand how civil rights law grants the authority to manage diversity of perspectives on campus.”

The Trump administration is reportedly on the verge of terminating a substantial federal contract with Harvard, estimated at around $100 million, due to the university’s non-compliance with the proposed reforms.

To date, Harvard appears to be standing firm against these pressures.
