NBC’s “Late Night” host Seth Meyers interviewed actor George Clooney recently, but notably skipped over a topic that’s been making waves: Joe Biden’s apparent failure to recognize Clooney during a fundraiser. This incident came up in discussions by CNN’s Jake Tupper and Axios’ Alex Thompson in their book “Original Sin,” where they claimed Biden didn’t acknowledge Clooney when he was behind the scenes last June.
Interestingly, about a month later, Clooney himself penned a guest essay in The New York Times, calling for Democrats to consider other candidates for the presidency due to concerns about Biden’s cognitive abilities. The focus of Meyers’ interview remained on Clooney’s acting career and his recent Tony nomination, which has sparked some chatter in media circles regarding the interview’s direction.
Despite the significant buzz around the Biden fundraising mention in “Original Sin,” it seems that liberal comedians like Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel, and Stephen Colbert have stayed silent about Biden’s cognitive issues. All three are known supporters of Biden and were involved in fundraising efforts for him last year. They’ve had him on for friendly interviews in the past, but when Myers last had Biden on, he touched momentarily on the president’s age before shifting gears.
In related discussions, special adviser Robert Hurr investigated rumors about Biden’s handling of confidential documents, ultimately deciding against filing charges, likely influenced by the belief that older individuals often struggle with memory. Myers labeled Hurr’s remarks as a “free hypothesis,” noting that, as a Republican lawyer appointed by Trump, Hurr’s judgment might carry a particular bias.
Myers suggested that if such reasoning is acceptable in the legal realm, then it could just as easily apply to Trump, drawing parallels to claims about Trump’s own mental acuity.
