Air Force pays tribute to fallen cadet candidate with a military funeral after a tragic loss

Tragic Death of Air Force Cadet Candidate

An 18-year-old Air Force cadet candidate, Ava Moore, was recently killed in a jet ski accident while kayaking at Grapevine Lake, Texas, during the Memorial Day weekend. She was set to start her training at the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) shortly. Her funeral took place on Saturday and was marked by full military honors.

Moore was laid to rest with the respect that accompanies those who die while on active duty. Cadets at the Air Force Academy are classified as active duty veterans and, as such, receive the full military funeral honors, which include playing “Taps,” folding flags, and presenting them to the family.

“We lost a remarkable teammate in Cadet Candidate Ava Moore,” remarked Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, director of the USAFA. “Her passion for leadership and service left a lasting impression on everyone.” He noted how her positivity helped her squadron face the challenges of preparatory school, and her ambition for leadership was evident. The team is committed to supporting Moore’s family and peers during this difficult time.

Moore had graduated from the Air Force Academy Preparatory School just days before her tragic death. It was reported that she was struck by a jet ski while kayaking.

Authorities apprehended a suspect related to the incident. Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez-Gonzalez, 22, was charged with second-degree manslaughter. Both she and another individual, Maikel Coello Perozo, 21, were arrested after having fled the scene, with suitcases reportedly packed. Perozo is also facing charges for a separate collision that occurred while fleeing.

As of now, Gonzalez-Gonzalez is held at the Tarrant County Jail on a $500,000 bond, while Perozo’s bail stands at $3,250. Immigration officials have placed holds on both individuals, meaning they’ll face deportation once legal processes are completed in the U.S.
