Rep. Elise Stefanik labels NYC area as 'Trump country' during passionate speech while considering run for governor

Stefanik Addresses Staten Island Republicans

At a recent event, Rep. Elise Stefanik declared Staten Island as “Trump Country,” addressing Governor Kathy Hochul directly before rallying local Republicans with a spirited speech.

During the annual Lincoln dinner, which attracted a pro-Trump crowd—many sporting MAGA hats—northern lawmakers criticized Hochul, referring to her as the “accidental” governor.

“Are you ready to fire Kathy Hochul in New York State next year?” she challenged attendees during her ten-minute talk at the Vanderbilt Catering Hall in South Beach.

Stefanik pointed out the troubling economic environment, stating, “We have the highest tax system in the country, overseen by a single-party Democrat led by Kathy Hochul. There are regulations that are pushing small businesses out of the state.”

She mentioned that her family has left, highlighting a significant trend of departures due to the state’s policies.

Stefanik also criticized a new $9 congestion toll for entering Manhattan, calling it “anti-worker” and suggesting it favors undocumented immigrants.

“This is how Kathy Hochul is impacting the economy,” she remarked.

She added, “The situation is changing in New York.”

Stefanik remarked that President Trump’s appeal was even greater than in places like Queens and the Bronx, emphasizing that Staten Island—and her district in the north—are indeed “Trump’s country.”

She announced her plans for a Political Action Committee named “Save New York,” aimed at bolstering Republican chances in upcoming elections.

Mike Tannoucis, chair of the Staten Island GOP, noted that Stefanik received a “rockstar welcome” at the event, praised by local Republican Representative Nicole Mariotakis.

Images circulated showing Stefanik engaging with attendees after her speech.

There’s also speculation about her potential candidacy for governor; Tannoucis expressed confidence in her qualifications, stating, “Elise has the wit, know-how, and fundraising ability to run for governor.”

Other Republicans keeping an eye on the governor’s race include Hudson Valley Rep. Michael Lawler and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, suggesting a competitive primary ahead if Stefanik decides to run.
