Elon Musk made headlines by criticizing President Trump’s substantial budget proposal on Tuesday.
As the world’s wealthiest individual, Musk referred to the legislation that Trump describes as “nasty hatred” and also “big and beautiful” as “outrageous” and “filled with pork.” He specifically called out a House member who supported the bill, stating, “I shamed those who voted for it. You know you were wrong. You know that.”
This statement is particularly notable coming just days after Musk stepped down from his position in the Semi-Official Government Efficiency Bureau (DOGE). His exit was marked by a joint appearance with Trump in the Oval Office, where they expressed mutual appreciation.
Musk shared his worries about the spending proposal during a recent CBS Sunday Morning interview.
On Capitol Hill, GOP leaders had hoped to quell concerns over the plan. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) mentioned that he spent about 20 minutes talking with Musk the day prior.
Johnson, who faced challenges in pushing the legislation through the House, remarked that he praised the bill’s strengths during their conversation, adding that Musk appeared to grasp its value. However, Musk’s unexpected criticism on Tuesday left Johnson feeling “very disappointed” and “terribly wrong.”
This raises some questions. One is whether Musk’s comments will resonate so negatively with Republican senators that they might reconsider the bill. Another is whether Musk is hinting at a shift in his stance that goes against Trump’s intentions, especially considering Trump’s significant financial commitments to the government.
Trump’s budget proposal, which includes a $4 trillion increase in the debt ceiling, faces a precarious future in the Senate. Although Republicans currently hold 53 out of 100 seats, both fiscally conservative members and moderates have yet to express their support.
Senators like Rand Paul (KY), Ron Johnson (WI), and Mike Lee (UT) belong to the first group, concerned that the legislation won’t adequately address the growing fiscal deficit or the national debt, which currently stands at approximately $36 trillion. Meanwhile, others like Senators Susan Collins (ME) and Lisa Murkowski (AK) are leaning towards the latter perspective.
Musk seems to align himself with the more conservative faction. Following Musk’s initial criticism on Tuesday, Paul took to social media to state his agreement with Musk, noting the waste in government spending. Musk amplified this message by sharing it with his 220 million followers on platform X, which he owns.
He also reshared criticisms from Lee, stating that the Senate needs to improve the bill, and highlighted Rep. Thomas Massey’s dissent as one of the few House Republicans opposing the legislation.
The partnership between Musk and Paul garnered attention as Trump criticized Kentucky senators for their hesitance to back the proposal. Trump posted on social media that Paul “lacks an understanding” of the spending bill, claiming, “He loves to vote ‘no’ on everything,” suggesting that while it’s politically savvy, it’s not effective.
In a follow-up post, Trump disparaged Paul, describing his ideas as “crazy” and suggested that constituents in Kentucky disapprove of him.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt attempted to downplay Musk’s remarks during a press briefing, asserting that the President’s stance on the bill remains unchanged. “It’s a big, beautiful bill and he’s stuck to it,” she stated.
However, GOP Senators appear less convinced. Johnson mentioned to Politico that Musk’s social media influence is growing rapidly among party members. He also noted a later post from Musk, which stated, “Next November we will fire all the politicians who betrayed the Americans.” This raises the possibility of Musk using his wealth to support significant political challenges, despite earlier comments suggesting he would reduce his political spending.
For Trump, Musk’s vocal opposition could be troubling. While Trump is no longer a candidate for election, Musk’s substantial platform and prominent online presence position him as a potentially influential critic.
So far, the relationship between Trump and Musk hasn’t completely soured. Yet, Musk’s comments on Tuesday seem likely to strain relations within the White House and among GOP leaders.
