Mike Johnson Responds to Musk’s Criticism of Spending Bill
House Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana expressed surprise at Elon Musk’s negative remarks regarding the so-called “big and beautiful bill.” After a conversation discussing the legislation, Johnson told reporters he was taken aback by Musk’s stance.
Despite his confidence in the bill, Johnson acknowledged that it took Congress decades to create it. He highlighted the national debt, which has surged past $36.2 trillion, indicating that a series of bills will be needed to address the situation.
He suggested that the reforms proposed during the Trump administration would require more than two years to implement, criticizing the current administration for a decline across various public policy indicators.
During their conversation, Musk and Johnson, who consider themselves friends, had a light-hearted exchange about the bill. Johnson recounted exchanging positive messages with Musk, only to be surprised when Musk later voiced his opposition, stating, “I think he’s wrong with flat.” Johnson mentioned that he conveyed his thoughts to Musk directly.
Johnson also commended Musk for his efforts in promoting government efficiency and reducing waste. However, Musk has also voiced concerns over excessive government spending, labeling it as a potential path to “debt slavery.” He characterized the spending bill as “nasty hatred” and criticized those who supported it, further retweeting messages from Senator Mike Lee advocating for prudent fiscal measures.
In response to Musk’s comments and the ongoing debate, several Republican senators voiced skepticism about the spending bill. House Republican leaders have stated their intention to defend it while emphasizing the need for funding aimed at curbing illegal immigration, citing violent incidents in Colorado as key reasons for maintaining this funding.
As the legislation progresses through the House, it will then be up to Senate Republicans to address it ahead of President Trump’s July 4 deadline.
