Mike Duggan Suspends Campaign for Michigan Governor

Former Democratic Mayor of Detroit, Mike Duggan, has decided to suspend his independent campaign for governor of Michigan. This sets the stage for a more traditional partisan contest to replace term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer in a state that has been leaning blue in recent years.

Duggan, who previously served as a well-liked mayor, attracted notable support during his initial unsuccessful write-in campaign. He also forged important connections with key players in the city, like Ford Motor Company Chairman Bill Ford Jr.

Initially, many thought Duggan’s independent run could disadvantage the Democratic candidate, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. However, his moderate views were also expected to appeal to some Republicans, particularly those considering supporting Republican Congressman John James.

NBC News reporter Henry Gomez mentioned that Democrats seem to be targeting Duggan nearly as aggressively as they do James, suggesting that this news might be favorable for the Democratic Party in Michigan.

The gubernatorial race, already contentious, features several top Democrats running as independents, with calls for notable figures like Pete Buttigieg to enter the fray.

“Dear Michiganders, I have decided to discontinue my campaign,” Duggan stated in a public announcement. “We knew the independence route would be challenging, and despite those odds, the drive for real change kept our campaign alive for over a year.”

Duggan disputed claims that he aimed to act as a “spoiler” for either side, insisting instead that he wanted to influence national politics in a positive way. “We hope our campaign will create a lasting impact,” he added, expressing gratitude for the support he received and wishing he could have done more.

When he launched his campaign, Duggan cited his family history and personal political journey as reasons for the need for transformation in governance. He shared that his late father had supported Ronald Reagan but rejected the direction of today’s Republican Party under Trump. Duggan himself pointed out that he feels the Democratic Party, once aligned with the working-class, has strayed in important ways.

One notable instance of contention occurred when Duggan faced criticism from Democrats for using the term “illegal immigrants” instead of “illegal aliens.” He remarked that this year seems particularly ripe for offering voters a third option in political choices.

Benson commented on Duggan’s involvement, praising him for bringing a sense of civility to a political environment sorely in need of it. “I want to thank Mayor Mike Duggan for everything he contributed to this election and his lasting service to Detroit,” she stated, acknowledging the divisiveness in current political discourse.

In her closing remarks, she emphasized the importance of collaboration among those committed to improving Michigan’s future.

Republican Congressman John James also expressed appreciation for Duggan’s service, recognizing the difficulties of public service. Although they hold substantial policy disagreements, James noted a shared acknowledgment that Michigan is facing challenges and stated that he is prepared to collaborate with anyone willing to pursue constructive solutions.

Despite Trump’s narrow victory in Michigan during the last election, the state has generally favored Democrats in other statewide positions, including Whitmer and Senator Elissa Slotkin, who succeeded Debbie Stabenow in 2024.
