Drone Strike in Ukraine Claims Lives
On Thursday night, a Russian drone strike in Prilky, a city in northern Ukraine, resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals, including a one-year-old child, along with their mother and grandmother, according to officials.
The assault involved six drones that hit a residential sector just before dawn. The child who died was notably the grandson of an emergency worker, as noted by Ukrainian President Voldimir Zelensky.
“One of the rescuers came home to face the aftermath,” Zelensky shared via Telegram. “It appears that the drone struck his residence.”
The young mother, identified as Dalina Shaida, was a police officer, according to the national police.
“Today, we feel deep pain,” the police echoed in their message. “This isn’t merely a loss; it has uprooted lives across three generations.”
This attack occurred shortly after a phone conversation between Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump mentioned that Putin described Russia as “very strong” in response to Ukraine’s recent drone operations targeting military airfields.
The Impact of the Attack
Officials reported that six people sustained injuries during the drone strike in Prilky and were receiving hospital care.
Prilky, with a prewar population of around 50,000, is located approximately 60 miles east of Kiev. The city is situated away from frontline areas and lacks significant military assets.
Zelensky mentioned plans to target a total of 103 drones, alongside one ballistic missile, across various locations including Donetsk, Kharkiv, Odesa, and others.
“It’s yet another significant strike,” he stated. “One more step to enforce stringent sanctions and apply collective pressure.”
Stalled Peace Efforts
While Ukraine accepted a ceasefire proposal from the US and extended an invitation to Putin for negotiations, Zelensky remains hopeful that international sanctions will compel a resolution.
However, there seems to be little eagerness on Putin’s part to meet with Zelensky, indicating a reluctance to compromise. Diplomatic endeavors led by the US have struggled to make substantial progress, leaving a protracted conflict ongoing.
Germany’s new leader, Friedrich Merz, was set to meet Trump in Washington as part of efforts to maintain US support for Ukraine’s military and diplomatic initiatives.
Andri Yahmack, chief aide to the Ukrainian president, spoke with US officials, accusing the Kremlin of intentionally stalling ceasefire talks and pushing for increased pressure on Russia.
During his visit to the US, Yermak engaged with senior American officials to bolster support for Ukraine’s defense amid an urgent need for enhanced air defense capabilities.
Further Attacks in Kharkiv
In a separate incident, 19 individuals were injured in Kharkiv due to another Russian drone attack. Among the injured were a child, a pregnant woman, and a 93-year-old woman, as reported by local governor Ole Snyevbov.
A Shahed-type drone struck two apartment buildings in the Slobidskyi district around 1:05 AM, leading to fires and damage to numerous cars.
“By attacking while people are asleep in their homes, the enemy once more showcases its treacherous tactics,” said Sinny Khobov via Telegram.
The assault also involved Russian aircraft dropping powerful gliding bombs on the southern city of Carson, which injured at least three more individuals, according to local authorities.
