Dehonai Carrington Addresses Criticism and Defends Her Playstyle
Dehonai Carrington, a player for the Dallas Wings, recently took to social media to address fans who have accused her of playing “dirty.” In her post, she asserted that while some may see her style as aggressive, she believes she’s simply playing hard and giving her all on the court. “Yal fans swear I’m a very dirty player. If I know basketball, I know I’m playing hard and never giving up,” she remarked, adding some heart emojis for emphasis.
This statement came just a day after her team’s game against the Seattle Storm, where she faced scrutiny over a controversial play. In that matchup, Carrington was assessed a Fragrant-1 foul in the fourth quarter after colliding with Skylar Diggins during a fast break. Carrington had attempted to block Diggins’ shot, resulting in contact that sent the Storm player crashing to the ground.
Following the incident, there was a moment where Carrington was spotted sitting on the bench, seemingly deep in thought. A few days later, she made headlines again after a game against the Chicago Sky where she appeared to confront a referee and then sought assistance from security, feeling threatened amidst the tensions on the court.
In her post about that incident, Carrington described the involvement of security as a “minor attack,” insisting that she was just trying to engage in a discussion when things escalated. She has often defended herself against the backlash she feels is unwarranted.
In a previous conversation with fellow player Angel Reese on the podcast “Unapologetically Angel,” Carrington elaborated on the harsh comments they receive. “They really loose with their mouths,” she pointed out, highlighting how some fans don’t realize the impact of their words. She has also expressed annoyance over comments regarding her appearance. “When people ask me why I have blonde hair, it frustrates me,” she admitted. “I got black eyebrows, and black body hair… and I don’t care. I’m still a natural blonde.”
Furthermore, Carrington has found herself in the spotlight for past controversies, including a clash with Caitlin Clark during her time with the Connecticut Sun. This incident resulted in Clark sustaining injuries, but Carrington has maintained that there was no intent to cause harm.
She’s also faced criticism for her political expressions, particularly when she wore a shirt that criticized the former president. In January, she called for WNBA players to take collective action regarding policies that adversely affect women and LGBTQ rights, emphasizing the importance of standing up for these issues.
“We’re making sure some policies are already in place. Of course, that’s when we take action,” Carrington stated, recognizing the need for advocacy as various rights come under threat.
