Geert Wilders Receives Support from Trump Amid Dutch Election Anticipation
Geert Wilders, a Dutch politician known for his anti-mass immigration stance, expressed gratitude towards President Donald Trump for his backing as the Netherlands prepares for a snap election. This follows the recent collapse of the government, primarily due to disputes over border and asylum policies.
On Thursday evening, the Trump administration offered implicit support for Wilders, who had been a significant figure in the Dutch government until just days ago. An unidentified official from the White House stated that they effectively guided Wilders in light of the Dutch coalition’s breakdown.
According to reports, the official mentioned that the Netherlands, like many European nations, is facing serious challenges due to open border policies and illegal immigration. They highlighted the need for leaders who prioritize their citizens and national identity, advocating for stronger borders and a more decisive approach to illegal migration, similar to the efforts being made in the U.S.
Reacting to this show of support from Trump, Wilders took to social media, declaring that they would once again win the Dutch elections and make the Netherlands great again.
This endorsement from Trump bears considerable weight, especially as political sentiment worldwide continues to polarize over pro- and anti-Trump sentiments. For instance, some have attributed this year’s Canadian election outcomes—rightly or wrongly—to Trump’s influence. Interestingly, Polish conservatives recently experienced a remarkable victory in their presidential election, overturning significant leads against globalist opponents, with some candidates openly backed by Trump.
Wilders has faced ongoing threats to his safety for over two decades, requiring 24-hour police protection. Currently, he leads the Party for Freedom (PVV), from which he withdrew his support, causing the government to turn into a minority faction. He had previously warned coalition partners about the importance of adhering to border control measures, indicating he would withdraw support if they did not comply.
After his warnings were overlooked, Wilders officially pulled the PVV’s backing, resulting in the government’s collapse and the country now approaching early elections. Under different circumstances, Wilders would have most likely become the prime minister, but coalition partners were unwilling to allow a right-wing populist to lead.
As reported by a Dutch publication, President Trump is expected to visit the Netherlands ahead of the upcoming snap elections, potentially providing him a chance for in-person support.
