Ime Udoka’s Future with the Knicks Uncertain

Ime Udoka might be taken off the list of potential coaching candidates for the Knicks.

Currently, the Rockets head coach is under contract through 2027, which means the Knicks would need to obtain permission from Houston just to have a conversation with him.

Additionally, they’d have to negotiate compensation with the Rockets to pry him away. However, reports indicate that Houston has “no interest in entertaining it.”

The Knicks recently parted ways with Tom Thibodeau after their playoff exit in the Eastern Conference Finals, where they were defeated by the Pacers in six games.

Thibodeau had been at the helm for five seasons, successfully guiding the Knicks to the playoffs in four of those years.

Knicks President Leon Rose commented, “Our organization is focused on winning a fan championship. This was a tough choice, but I informed Tom that it was time to move in a different direction. I truly appreciate his dedication to the Knicks, putting his heart and soul into this role.”

He continued, “Ultimately, we made the decision we believe is best for the organization’s future. Tom will always be part of the Knicks family, and we wish him the best.”

Udoka is often regarded as one of the top coaches in the NBA, despite some off-court issues.

Under his leadership, the Celtics reached the NBA Finals in his first season, although they lost to the Warriors.

Nonetheless, his stint with Boston was short-lived due to suspension and eventual termination over alleged inappropriate relationships with female staff members.

During his two seasons with the Rockets, he has significantly turned the team around.

This past season, the Rockets achieved a 52-30 record, finishing second in the Western Conference, despite being knocked out by the Warriors in the first round of the playoffs.

In his first year with the team, they ended up with a 41-41 record, which was quite an improvement considering they hadn’t won more than 22 games in the four seasons prior to Udoka’s arrival.
