Walmart’s New Security Robots Stir Mixed Reactions

Walmart is rolling out a new security initiative that has not been well received by shoppers. Many are expressing their displeasure with the company’s efforts to curb crime in parking lots nationwide.

A TikTok video featuring a robotic security guard patrolling one of Walmart’s parking lots has drawn attention. In it, the content creator Gold Pinemusic films the robot, asking it questions like, “What’s your name?”

Shoppers nearby seem intrigued as well; one woman even knelt down to take a close-up photo of the robot. It’s a bit odd, isn’t it? These scenes have sparked a flurry of opinions online, with viewers chiming in from all angles.

Walmart has faced criticism lately, with prices rising due to tariffs and supply chain issues impacting retailers across the board. CEO Doug McMillon mentioned in a recent earnings call that while the company aims to keep prices low, the pressures from tariffs make it quite challenging.

In fact, some commenters on TikTok blamed the introduction of robots for rising prices, suggesting that replacing human employees with machines could be a factor. A spokesperson for Walmart acknowledged that price fluctuations occur for various reasons.

There are still other voices of frustration. One commenter pointed out, “Walmart will do anything to avoid paying someone,” while another expressed longing for local grocery stores that have since disappeared.

Concerns also arise regarding the data collected by these robots, as shoppers worry that license plate numbers may be recorded. Walmart initially tested these robots back in 2015 for tasks like stocking shelves and labeling items.

Since then, the company has incorporated advanced robotics and surveillance tech to enhance its stores, aiming to keep up with competitors and improve customer experiences.

To bolster crime reporting in car parks, Walmart is installing solar-powered security towers manufactured by Liveview Technology in select locations, staffed by officers known as Lott officers.

The footage captured by these officers is typically shared with local law enforcement when needed. As one resident noted, “The information is practical,” particularly in dealing with vehicle-related incidents.

Others echoed their concerns about crime in parking lots. A resident from Hawaii recalled a friend’s vehicle being broken into and noted the littering problems often seen around the area.

The robotic security guard, designed primarily for surveillance, is thought to be monitored remotely by loss prevention staff inside the store, which, frankly, feels a bit unsettling for some.

While there’s significant irritation regarding the rising costs associated with expanded surveillance, other commenters are becoming more familiar with the concept. One mentioned that a hospital where their spouse works has had a similar robot for years.

At this stage, Walmart’s robotic security guards are only present in select locations across the country, but the buzz from TikTok suggests that this might just be another sign of economic uncertainty ahead.
