Military Preparing to Deploy 20,000 Soldiers for Immigration Enforcement

Potential Deployment of National Guard for Immigration Enforcement

Army officials have suggested that the Trump administration is gearing up to deploy 20,000 National Guard troops to address illegal immigration issues. However, the Pentagon has stated that no final decision has been made yet.

During a Senate hearing on Thursday, Secretary of War Dan Driscoll and General Randy George acknowledged that the National Guard forces are prepared to assist in immigration enforcement. They assured attendees that the mission would adhere to legal standards, addressing concerns raised by Democrats. This dialogue follows a request for military assistance from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) aimed at tackling illegal immigration.

A Pentagon representative mentioned, “The department is evaluating a request for support from DHS regarding mission assistance.” There are currently no announcements concerning deployment, but updates will be shared once DOD support is confirmed.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin elaborated that the intention behind the deployment is to enable the National Guard to help arrest and deport individuals illegally residing in the country. She emphasized the responsibility to prioritize American citizens’ safety, citing the urgency of dealing with serious criminals such as gang members and violent offenders.

The National Guard functions as a component of the U.S. military, under the control of both state governors and the president. Various Republican governors have previously mobilized National Guard troops to secure the southern border, responding to significant levels of illegal immigration that escalated during President Biden’s tenure. Records show over 101 million encounters with illegal immigrants during that period.

Surveys starting in February 2024 indicated that many Americans support the idea of using military resources to enforce immigration laws. Border enforcement official Tom Homan stated that the Trump administration had facilitated the deportation of 139,000 illegal immigrants since taking office.

In March 2025, there were historical low figures with fewer than 7,200 border encounters recorded. Importantly, the trafficking of fentanyl saw a 54% decline, according to DHS reports.

Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa mentioned during the Senate hearing that he believes deploying the National Guard in suitable roles aligns with their capabilities and supports the effort effectively.
