Mets squander late advantage in a tough loss to share series with Dodgers

Mets Face Frustration in Close Loss to Dodgers

In Los Angeles, the Mets were on the brink of securing a series win, but unfortunately, frustration took center stage on Thursday.

Francisco Alvarez mishandled a key throw, echoing a mistake made by Brandon Nimmo in left field just two nights earlier.

Ultimately, the Mets squandered their eighth lead of the game, falling 6-5 to the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine, which wrapped up the four-game series with a split.

Reed Garrett entered the eighth inning with a 5-3 advantage, but after the Dodgers scored a run, a throwing error by Brett Baty allowed another run to slip through.

When Will Smith came sliding into home, Alvarez was blocking Garrett, which resulted in some confusion at the plate.

Garrett began that inning by walking Mookie Betts, and Smith’s double brought the Dodgers closer at 5-4.

Then, Michael Conforto, batting just .167, delivered a critical RBI single that allowed the Dodgers to take a 6-5 lead.

Just a couple of nights ago, Nimmo misplayed a fly ball off Freddie Freeman’s bat, leading to a tough loss in extra innings.

In the early part of the game, Pete Alonso hit his third homer in two games, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead against Landonack.

Nimmo and Starling Marte followed with back-to-back home runs, pushing the Mets to a 3-0 lead. Nimmo’s shot was his 10th of the season, while Marte hit his fourth.

However, the Mets couldn’t capitalize and finish off the inning.

After Alonso struck out and Jeff McNeil walked, Tyrone Taylor’s single loaded the bases. Baty’s sacrifice fly made it 4-0.

But then the Dodgers struck back, scoring three runs in the third inning. Miguel Rojas walked, and then Betts hit an RBI double.

Smith’s single and Teoscar Hernandez’s fielder’s choice chipped away at the Mets’ lead, bringing the score to 4-3.

Peterson dealt with a couple of double plays in the fourth and sixth innings after allowing a single in each frame.

In the fifth, he faced challenges with runners on base but managed to retire Smith and Hernandez after an earlier single from Ohtani.

With Alonso’s RBI single in the eighth, the Mets secured a 5-3 lead, marking his 55th RBI of the season, putting him ahead of Rafael Devers in the league.
